Specialist care for people living with Parkinson's disease

Parkinson's Disease Care at Home with Your Care Solutions

Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological condition that primarily affects movement, balance, and coordination, but can also have a significant impact on cognition, mood, and communication. At Your Care Solutions, we provide specialist home care that is carefully tailored to the unique challenges of living with Parkinson's, enabling people to remain as independent as possible in their own homes for as long as possible.

Understanding Parkinson's disease

Parkinson's disease affects the dopamine-producing neurons in the brain, leading to symptoms including tremor, muscle rigidity, slowness of movement, and balance difficulties. Many people also experience non-motor symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disturbances, anxiety, depression, and cognitive changes. The condition progresses differently for each individual, and care must adapt accordingly.Tremor, rigidity, and slowness of movementBalance and coordination difficultiesNon-motor symptoms including fatigue and mood changes

Specialist trained care workers

Our care workers receive specialist training in supporting people with Parkinson's disease, including understanding how the condition progresses, the importance of medication timing, communication strategies, and fall prevention. They work with sensitivity and patience, understanding that symptoms can fluctuate significantly throughout the day and responding appropriately to 'on' and 'off' periods.

Supporting movement and mobility

Maintaining movement and preventing falls is a central concern for people with Parkinson's. Our care workers support safe movement around the home, assist with transfers and positioning, and work alongside physiotherapists to encourage and facilitate recommended exercises. We are trained to use cueing techniques that can help clients initiate and maintain movement more effectively.

Mealtimes and nutritional support

Eating and drinking can become increasingly challenging for people with Parkinson's, particularly as the condition progresses. Tremor can make self-feeding difficult, and swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) are common. Our care workers provide discreet, dignified mealtime support and are aware of the importance of texture-modified foods and adequate hydration for people with Parkinson's.

Managing complex medication schedules

Medication timing is critically important in Parkinson's disease – taking medications even a short time late can significantly worsen symptoms. Our care workers understand this and treat medication reminders for Parkinson's clients as a priority, working closely with the GP and specialist nurse to ensure that medication regimes are followed precisely and that any concerns are communicated promptly.

Adapting care as needs change

As Parkinson's progresses, the level and type of care needed will change. Our flexible care model means that we can increase the frequency and complexity of support as required, moving seamlessly from light assistance to more intensive personal care. We involve the individual and their family in all care planning decisions, ensuring that care always reflects current needs and personal wishes.
